چکیده
Introduction: Optic atrophy results from the disease process that cause irreversible damage to ganglion cells and anterior visual pathway, but may also result posterior pathway involvement. The etiology causing this condition is vast regardless of underlying it carries bad prognosis at times be life threatening. study aims assess patients with optic nerve presenting B.P. Koirala lions centre for ophthalmic studies identify etiology.
Materials methods: This a descriptive conducted Lions Centre Ophthalmic studies. All cases who presented our outpatient department March 2016 2017 were included in study. In addition detailed evaluation, assessment acuity, color vision, contrast sensitivity field done if feasible. Other relevant investigations establish etiological cause.
Results: A total 62 study, 35 having bilateral 27 unilateral accounting 97 eyes atrophy. mean age affected was 40.63±17.36 years male female ratio 1.2:1. most common traumatic neuropathy (n=16, 25.8%). Majority had pale disc (n=70, 72.2%) rest temporal pallor (n=27, 27.8%).

Clinical evaluation of optic atrophy in patients with neurological disorders.
OBJECTIVE Optic atrophy is a pathological term applied to optic nerve shrinkage from any process that produces degeneration of axons in the anterior visual system (the retino-geniculate pathway). The pathologist can make the diagnosis of optic atrophy by direct observation of the histopathological changes in the optic nerve. The clinician is restricted to indirect evidence by observing the opti...
متن کاملCorticosteroids do not prevent optic nerve atrophy following optic neuritis.
Corticosteroids shorten the period of functional impairment following relapses in optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis (MS); however they have not, thus far, been shown to affect the final level of function compared with placebo. There has been recent interest in the use of corticosteroids as neuroprotective agents by their effect of decreasing nitric oxide (NO) production by mononuclear cells...
متن کاملOptic Nerve: Clinical Examination
Optic nerve-head examination is probably the most important step in the diagnosis of glaucoma and is also extremely important in monitoring patients with established glaucoma. There are several ways to clinically examine the optic nerve head, including direct ophthalmoscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and slit lamp biomicroscopy with contact lenses (such as a Goldman lens), handheld lenses (such ...
متن کاملClinical Evaluation of Optic Nerve Head in Glaucoma
Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is characterized by changes in the intrapapillary and parapapillary region of the optic nerve head, including excavation of the optic nerve head and consequent defects in retinal sensitivity with visual field defects and other psychophysical alterations. Clinical evaluation of the optic nerve head has been shown to have a high specificity and good precision for gla...
