Clinical Assessment and Etiological Evaluation of Optic Nerve Atrophy

Introduction: Optic atrophy results from the disease process that cause irreversible damage to ganglion cells and anterior visual pathway, but may also result posterior pathway involvement. The etiology causing this condition is vast regardless of underlying it carries bad prognosis at times be life threatening. study aims assess patients with optic nerve presenting B.P. Koirala lions centre for ophthalmic studies identify etiology.
 Materials methods: This a descriptive conducted Lions Centre Ophthalmic studies. All cases who presented our outpatient department March 2016 2017 were included in study. In addition detailed evaluation, assessment acuity, color vision, contrast sensitivity field done if feasible. Other relevant investigations establish etiological cause.
 Results: A total 62 study, 35 having bilateral 27 unilateral accounting 97 eyes atrophy. mean age affected was 40.63±17.36 years male female ratio 1.2:1. most common traumatic neuropathy (n=16, 25.8%). Majority had pale disc (n=70, 72.2%) rest temporal pallor (n=27, 27.8%).
